The Rectorate prepares decisions of the Senate and the University Council. Both bodies are informed by the rectorate about all matters concerning the university.

The Saxon Higher Education Freedom Act assigns the Rectorate the responsibility for many matters of the university:

Among other things, the university development plan is prepared by the rectorate. Likewise, target agreements are formulated internally with the faculties and externally with the State Ministry for Science and the Arts.

The rectorate decides in agreement with the senate on the establishment of study programs and central facilities of the university.

The Rectorate is also responsible for planning the constructional development and equipment of the university.

It allocates the posts and funds assigned to the university. The rectorate submits the draft economic plan to the university council and prepares the university's annual financial statements.
