Rector

Rector Volker Tolkmitt leads Mittweida University of Applied Sciences and represents it externally. He is the chairman of the rectorate and determines its guidelines. 
Prof. Dr. rer. oec. Volker Tolkmitt took office as rector on February 15, 2023 for a term of five years after the Extended Senate of Mittweida University elected him as rector on December 14, 2022.

Professor Tolkmitt is a member of the rectorate led by his predecessor Professor Dr. phil. Ludwig Hilmer since 2017 as Vice-Rector Education and Deputy Rector. He has played a decisive role in shaping the development of Mittweida University of Applied Sciences in recent years, and further development under his leadership ties in with Mittweida’s top position among Saxon Universities of Applied Sciences.

For the new rectorate, the ability of Mittweida University of Applied Sciences to meet challenges more quickly and to think further ahead than others in responding to them is crucial to this continued positive development. Freedom within and reliable resources should ensure that students and researchers can develop and try out good ideas. In the view of the rectorate, the university has great potential in creating further offerings for study and research that are rethought and exemplary across disciplines. The university does this within the horizon of the needs of science, business and society.

Prof. Dr. rer. oec. Volker Tolkmitt studied economics and business administration at TU Berlin, where he earned a part-time doctorate in European integration and financial markets at the Chair of International Economic Relations. From 2000 to 2006 he was head of the banking department at the Berufsakademie Sachsen, Staatliche Studienakademie Leipzig. Since 2006 he teaches and researches at the professorship "General Business Administration esp. Risk and Financial Management" at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences and was Dean of the Faculty of Economics (now: Industrial Engineering) from 2009 to 2015. From 2015 to 2017, Professor Tolkmitt was a member of the University Council of Mittweida University and from 2017 until he took office as Rector on February 15, 2023, he was Prorector Education of the University. 
Volker Tolkmitt is married and has two daughters.
